With more than 5,000 people attending both the fair and its program last year, BANGKOK ART BOOK FAIR 2019 continues to thrive as an opened stage showcasing independent publications and contemporary art publications as well as acting as a platform for sharing and exchanging insights together, exhibitors and visitors alike. This year, the fair’s theme is focusing on self-publishing culture and the printing and distributing trends of independent magazines today.

Apart from its main FAIR program and more than 50 exhibitors from Thailand and overseas, special events in BANGKOK ART BOOK FAIR 2019 includes a photo book launch of Prism of Photography: Dispersion of Knowledge and Memories of the 6th October Massacre, an experimental collaboration between a researcher, Thanavi Chotpradit, and a research assistant/artist, Kornkrit Jianpinidnan in BOOK LAUNCH. In response to the fair’s theme this year, Steven Watson, the founder of STACK (www.stackmagazines. com), his monthly subscription service, providing a convenient way for people to enjoy the best independent magazines, is invited to share how the business helps make quality independent titles accessible to a wider group of readers around the globe alongside Davide Cazzaro, the publisher and editor-in-chief of NANG Magazine (www.nangmagazine.com) an independent print-only magazine dedicated to cinema and cinema culture in the Asian World who will share how he produces and design the magazine despite the challenges in the contemporary context.

New this year is FAMILY ACTIVITY program, premiered with What a Book! An UNUSUAL bookmaking workshop for kids In this family workshop, kids will have fun with bookmaking, crafting their own story and tale through drawing, writing, cutting and collaging unique Risograph printed drawings and typesets, exclusively from Witti Studio. In FOOD & DRINK, Samrubforthai is back on its third year with the fair, cooking delicious menus under the theme #samrubtoryod retelling old and forgotten recipes and adding new interpretations that guarantee to open up taste buds with rich flavors.

Publications under the theme, UNUSUAL from the DATA / STORYTELLING & BOOK WORKSHOP *03 will be featured in MINI SHOWCASE. In addition, Tokyo Hot, a Thai style crepe shop by a local contemporary art collective will serve their takes on this famed sidewalk dessert with special zines on an opening day whereas live MUSIC & PERFORMANCE will be on every night throughout the course of 4 days by Bang Sue Electrix, DJ Tada, Interesting Pictures Collective and ShapeShifter.

BANGKOK ART BOOK FAIR 2019 is determined to maximise the capacity of art books and dreams for endless stories. It is an endeavour to support a self-publishing practice, to promote diverse discourses through printed material, and to expand a community of art book makers and readers. Initiated by STUDIO 150 in partnership with BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY in 2017, BANGKOK ART BOOK FAIR fosters knowledge dissemination and distribution of artistic materials, inspirations, and hopes by bringing together individuals and groups of artists and designers, local alternative publishing houses, international network of independent as well as established publishers.
