MELO House is BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY’s inaugural exhibition. This show highlights Wisut Ponnimit’s beloved iconic character ‘Mamuang’, and is the third installment of his MELO project: a series of site specific projects that Ponnimit started in 2005. For MELO House, Ponnimit has constructed a large-scale installation within the main gallery comprising of 139 watercolor illustrations which connect together as a maze (MELO means maze in Japanese) that follows Mamuang and the different choices made by her and their subsequent outcomes. Through experiencing the different stories and possibilities unfold, audiences are able consider the choices made in their own lives and their consequences.

Since his debut as cartoonist in 2003, Wisut Ponnimit has actively produced works in various genres: illustrations, animation, music composition. In Yokohama Triennale 2005, he caught the attention of Japanese manga publishers and signed contracts with Shinchosha and Shogakukan, from that discovery, he has become one of the key foreign artists in Japan’s manga scene. His knowledge and practice in Eastern philosophy and his straightforward storytelling technique have informed his artistic works. Subtle expression of Ponnimit’s works have succeeded to communicate widely to a diverse group of people, some cartoon characters have earned significant popularity.
