The project arose from conversations that began with Nawin Nuthong’s recent exhibition, A room, where they are COEVALs [Precise at a dig site door], and extends on his interest in placing multiple fictional characters from disparate continuums within the same narrative for the creation of new imaginaries. By reaching out to individuals whose engagement with storytelling have resulted in multifarious manifestations, the project is an examination of the tools involved in the storytelling process and emerges as an Ars Poetica.
Heaven Crumbles: The Marvellous Misadventures of Sudsakorn appropriates Sudsakorn – the fictional character from Sunthorn Phu’s epic poem Phra Aphai Mani – as the protagonist of a fantastical tale of a hero’s quest to seek out ancient creatures in the possession of supernatural powers. Conceptualised as an allegorical tale for the times, the humour of the scenes belies the gravity of the situation. It is apparent that the story’s creators, and their associated avatars within the animation, take to fantasy not simply as an escape, but rather, as a means of processing and interrogating the perceived absurdity of the present socio-political circumstance; finding creative ways to discuss sensitive topics.
